Léo Lebot Flies in Glasgow Commonwealth Games

News Brief:

One could be forgiven for thinking Léo Lebot has taken his occupation of studying to be an aeroplane pilot, to his sport, as he has been flying up and down the Tallcross International Swimming Centre at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Léo again put in another stunning performance, swimming the 100m freestyle in 58.68 to break his second National Record from as many events. Léo bettered his previous national record of 59.19, that he set in Fiji in May at the Oceania Swimming Championships. Swimming in lane 2 of heat 3, Léo finished 6th in his heat and 59th overall.

Commenting on his swim, Léo Lebot said “I gave that swim absolutely everything, I thought I might even faint when I hit the wall. I am really happy with my time as I was aiming for a sub 59 but the pleasing thing is I know I can go even faster. The first 75m was almost perfect but I died in the last 25m, once I fix that up, I know I can get my time down even further. I also want to thank all the messages of support the whole team has been receiving from back home in Vanuatu, it really means a lot to us and inspires us to do the best we can.”

Vanuatu National Head Coach, Lachlan Milner added “I knew Léo was going to go after his swim today, as he is a great racer. The signs were good from his 50m earlier in the week, which showed with good speed over the first 50m, hitting the turn at 27 seconds. Pleasingly he gave everything in the second 50m and held on for a fantastic time, but the great thing is there is so much more improvements left in him, his swimming journey is only just beginning.”

The Vanuatu swimmers will wrap up their Commonwealth Games campaign on Tuesday 28th July, with Léo Lebot returning in the men’s 50m butterfly and Loane Russet OLY closing out the meet in the women’s 50m freestyle. The heats begin at 10:30am local time (8:30pm in Vanuatu).
