The Vanuatu Aquatics Federation has marked the new year by entering into a partnership with Vanuatu Society for People with Disability (VSPD).

VAF Officers with VSPD Projects Coordinator and Field Worker.

The MOU was signed on February 9 by the VSPD Project Coordinator Christelle George and VAF Programs Coordinator Louisa Pedro Kalman. The agreement outlines how the two organizations intend to work together to deliver sport for development programs. The VAF programs to be delivered will be ‘Learn to Swim’ and ‘Mama Aquatics’.

The two organizations are currently finalizing strategies and logistical plans for the programs to be delivered once a week at Mele Beach starting from March. The VAF team are looking forward to working, learning and growing with VSPD. The MOU is for period of one-year.

The primary purpose of this partnership is to further enhance inclusive sport for development programs, empower the women within this group to participate in sports for development programs and be able to include people of all ages and abilities to be involved in physical activity through a sport.

“VSPD is very happy about this partnership, to be able to work together and be engaged in swimming programs,” said Christelle George Project Coordinator at VSPD.

“This also serves as a platform for our participants to be empowered and socialize together providing an opportunity to speak about the different challenges they encounter. Overall, this is a beneficial agreement both physically and mentally and we are happy to be involved.”

VAF President Nancy Miyake added she too is excited about the partnership.

“The signing of this MoU demonstrates our shared interest in expanding well-being and physical activity opportunities to people of all abilities.

“VAF is glad to share our passion in helping more people be safer in the water, and experience the health benefits of participating in aquatic activity,” said Miyake.

She concluded by saying that the federation is looking forward to a productive partnership with VSPD.

VAF will be putting updates and news about the programs on its Facebook page and website. We also welcome new partnerships from other inclusive organizations that are interested for an engagement program that both parties can work.

August 23 2024

Vanuatu was represented in the swimming events at the recent Paris2024 by Vanuatu Aquatics athletes Johnathan Silas and Loane Russet.

The Olympics is the pinnacle multisport event, held every 4 years, bringing together athletes from all around the world and the 2024 games were held in Paris, from 26 July to 11 August.

The VAF teens, 19-year-old Johnathan and 18-year-old Loane, were accompanied by VAF team manager Ben Howard, having been among the Vanuatu athletes successfully selected as the national swimmers to represent the country on the global stage.

They competed alongside the world’s best, showing determination and skill. Their commitment was showcased by the outstanding performances from the pair in the pool.

The two swimmers had undergone a six-week- training program at Holiday Inn in Port Vila, in preparation for the Games.

Johnathan and Loane participated in the 100m and 50m Men’s and Women’s Free style events, with their results. Setting new national records and personal bests for each.

RESULTS:

100 metres:

  • Johnathan Silas: 59.38 seconds (new PB & national) Previous record 1.01.06 min

50 metres:

  • Loane Russet: 28.86 seconds (new PB & national) Previous record 29.33

Johnathan Silas participated in the Pacific Games in Solomon Islands, the World Aquatics Championships and the Oceania Championships in the past 12 months. While Loane Russet also competed in the 2024 World Aquatics and Oceania Championships, alongside other swimmers in the Vanuatu national squad. However, Loane and Johnathan were the only two selected to participate at the Paris Olympics.

‘If I had to summarize this experience into one word, it would be: incredible. My first Olympics was and will always be my greatest achievement. Being able to represent my country at such a high level makes me so proud. To be able to swim amongst some of the greatest swimmers as well as seeing how dedicated they are to their sport, made me realize how important swimming is to me and how passionate I am about it. Concerning my event, I am happy to have reached my goal, which was to finish with a time of under 29s and set a new national record. I will never forget the amazing moments I had alongside my team, and I will always look back to these wonderful moments.’ said Loane.

Team Manager Ben Howard added how he was proud of Loane and Johnathan’s accomplishments at the Olympics’ I couldn’t be prouder of both Johnathan and Loane, they did the hard work leading into the Games and prepared really well in Paris. To have one swim, making your Olympic debut in front of over 17,000 fans and smash your best time, is a credit to their preparation for the Games. I really hope this is not the end but the beginning for these two incredibly talented young athletes that made history in Paris as Vanuatu’s first Olympic swimmers.’

The exceptional performance from these two athletes underlined their dedication and hard work, in making the most of this special opportunity.

The Vanuatu Aquatic Federation extends its heartfelt congratulations to Johnathan and Loane on their remarkable accomplishment and looks forward to witnessing their continued success in future international events.

VAF acknowledge its sponsors World Aquatics, VASANOC and especially Holiday Inn, for the continuous support towards the high-performance events, without which attendance and successful performance events, without which attendance and successful performance would not have been possible.

04. June 2018 · Comments Off on 3.2km BRED Bank Round Iririki Island Swim 2018 Results · Categories: News

There is one swimming event that open water swimmers in Vanuatu can’t miss – the iconic 3.2km Round Iririki Island Swim which takes swimmers over one of the deepest channels in the Pacific. Vanuatu Aquatics Federation, the national swimming federation under VASANOC and FINA, hosted the swim for first time in the beautiful Port Vila harbour on Saturday the 2nd of June.

While this event usually battles the skies and rain, the 2018 swim had perfect conditions. Glass water on a crystal clear high tide – even a large octopus managed to get a close look at the finish line. Swimmers came down with the sunrise to get their numbers tattooed on their arm and listen in to VAF staff and volunteers go over the course and the safety briefing.

We had 57 swimmers go around the island, with some familiar faces returning from overseas and 4 youth swimmers give the adults a run for their money!

The swim started at 7:20 taking advantage of the hightide making sure all competitors made it over the Iririki reef to accommodate long swimmer arms. Swimmers jetted around glorious yachts and pirate ships in the marina up to the halfway point at the tip of Iririki, high fiving the Nemo Tours boat as they went past.

The finish was the closest in the history of the swim with the head judges needing to go to both video and finish photos to make a decision. After much debate between finish judges first place was declared a tie to both locals Jake Ward and Matt Cook for the first time ever! 3rd and 4th places were also neck a neck with Tony Midolo just pushing out Sharna Hinchcliff for 3rd place by 4 seconds – both from Australia. It was a fantastic race to watch and had spectators leaning against the new seafront railings for the best view of the finish.

After the announcements of the 1st male and 1st female prize, our entire prize pool was opened up to all competitors as a random prize draw with people eagerly gathered underneath the BRED Bank tent to see if they’d be able to take home their choice of prize.

Prizes included 2 domestic return tickets courtesy of Air Vanuatu, An accommodation package with the beautifully renovated Tamanu on the beach, water bottles from Azure Pure Water, Tea Towels thanks to Pandanus and children’s backpacks from Kings Swim in Australia. In total we had nearly 40 prizes to give away.

Thanks to all our overseas visitors who made the trek to Port Vila to be apart of our race – it wouldn’t be the same without you and hope that there are challengers to our blistering duo of Matt and Jake next year.

A special thanks has to go out to our team of volunteers who helped VAF run this event for the first time ever. Big thanks to Shoshi for getting all registered swimmers ready and caught them at the finish, the team of safety volunteers who tirelessly followed and guided swimmers around the course – thank you Shantini, Sarah, Sally, Peter, Matt, Nish, Alex, Brodia and Vanessa. Also thank you to Arlene Bax for taking incredibly beautiful underwater footage of the swim.

Many thanks to ProMedical for standing by with their ambulance, ready for anything and looking after our swimmers.

And last but not least, a major thank you to our Australian Volunteer Tracy Elliot who brought the event together, organising registration weeks before the event, making sure swimmers had shirts and food post race and working with the local tour operators for the donated kayak and boat support. Tracy has been working with the federation and staff for over a year to help build local swim clubs in communities and kick starting water polo in Port Vila.

The 2019 swim has been penciled in as an 8 am start on the 8th of June pending confirmation from the Vanuatu Tourism Office. Once the date has been set in concrete we’ll let everyone know so we can start planning for your 2019 Vanuatu swimming holiday.

Thanks again for everyone who made this event a success – we couldn’t do it without you. In 2019 we plan to introduce a few social swims around the event so swimming clubs or social swimmers can really make the most of a swimming holiday in Vanuatu. Don’t forget to share our event and look out for details of our 2019 swim!

All funds raised through this event go directly to the Vanuatu Aquatics Federation and help us deliver much needed learn to swim and aquatics based programs around the islands and give opportunities for some of our elite swimmers to compete overseas.
